Getting started with your TechOnline courses at Piedmont

I am registered at Piedmont and ready to start my Online Courses
(Information &  Orientation)

Follow the steps below to get registered and started with online courses:

1.  Apply to the College

  • If you are a first-time student at Piedmont Technical College, you will need to complete an Application for Admissions

  • If you are a high school student, you will also need to apply for Early Admissions

  • Students taking a course to transfer back to their home college will need to complete steps for Transient Students.

If you have been a Piedmont Technical College student enrolled in credit courses in the last year, continue #2.

2.  Contact Your Advisor

  • If you are planning to apply your distance learning courses toward a certificate or degree, you need to contact a faculty advisor -- either an online faculty advisor or your on-campus advisor.

If you are not planning to work on a certificate or degree and know exactly what you need, or if you are a transient student from another college, continue to #3.

3.  Register for Your Courses

Complete our Distance Learning Registration Form including the course(s) you wish to take and your chosen payment method. You will receive a confirmation of your registration via e-mail. This form is for online (Internet) classes only.

If your application is processed or you're currently a student at the college, you may use  PTC Pathway to register for your classes.

4.  Pay Your Tuition and Fees

You will need to pay your tuition and fees by the "last day to pay" date for the term. Follow this link for information on tuition and fees. Follow this link for course policy and refund information.

5.  Order Your Textbooks

Order your textbooks online or visit the PTC Campus Shop on the Lex Walters Campus in Greenwood.

You may pay for books and supplies online via credit card.

Books will be delivered to your home address.

Students at other technical colleges may have their books sent to their host college bookstore if they need to charge them against financial aid awards.

5.  Complete the Orientation

View the college's web-based Planet Piedmont Orientation.  Be sure to explore the information for students taking online courses and any other student types that apply to you. Also check the specific orientation information for online learners at the end of this presentation.

Review the Online Course Honor Code.

The college also offers individualized on-site orientations for students who wish additional assistance before starting an online course. For a scheduled time for your orientation, contact Ruth Smith in the Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) by email or by calling (864) 941-8433. You may also email or call your instructor for an appointment.

6.  Acquaint Yourself with Course Requirements

Take time before courses begin to learn about your course requirements.  To view requirements for a course, simply visit the course listings and click on the course and section for which you have registered.

7.  Begin Your Class

On or after the first day of class, try your username and password in the WebCT Course Management Tool.

Username:
Your Social Security Number with no dashes

Password:
Your 6-digit birth date in YYMMDD format

Example: June 1, 1980 = 800601

Once you are inside WebCT and your online course, complete any required assignments and send an introductory "hello" message to your instructor using the Private WebCT Mail icon.  In some courses, you will find the icon under Communication. You must start your class at the beginning of the term and stay current with assigned work. Students not attending classes each week by logging in and participating with class work will be dropped for "non-attendance." Students who do not login the first week of class will be removed as "did not attend" students and must petition for re-admission to the class.

If you have problems, call the distance learning trouble line -- (864) 941-8627 -- weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. On Friday afternoons and weekends, please leave a message on the trouble line with your phone number, best time to call and nature of your problem.  We will return your call as soon as possible. You may also use the Online Help Desk anytime. Please provide your social security number on the "Office Number" line and your home email and phone number where requested. The helpline is monitored 24/7.
