Internet Popup Problems on the Internet

Popup boxes created by some Internet sites have brought a popularity for a variety of "popup eliminator" software download add-ins for Internet Explorer. These software add-ins are offered free on the Internet and are often provided already installed with new computers.

WebCT, the course administration software used by the college uses "popup" boxes to make it easier for students to navigate through the course information. Even the login dialog box is a window that pops open in your Internet explorer to allow you to login. The email in WebCT uses popup boxes to open dialog boxes to read and compose mail. The WebCT tests popup the questions and answer options when they work properly. To use these features, you must allow popup boxes to open.

What should I do if I have a popup eliminator?

Because many Web sites use friendly popup information, most popup eliminators have an easy to find icon added to the browser toolbar that says popup eliminator. When you click on this icon, you get an option to "disable" or "enable" the popup eliminator feature. This software must be disabled to use WebCT features...or for some, to even login to WebCT.

If you have problems getting the login box to open in WebCT or you have problems with email or exam boxes opening properly, you may have a popup eliminator on your browser that needs to be "disabled." Look all around your browser task bars to see if you can find the tool that will control this device. If you cannot find it, check with your system provider for information on browser plug-ins that have been installed with your system.

Try to login from a college computer or at a friend's house. If you can access the WebCT tools on another computer, then the problem is in your home computer's browser configuration.

Spyware or Adware could be causing your problems with your browser.

Spyware and adware are moving from nuisance to threat and demand serious countermeasures. Although the dangers are many, you have quite an arsenal at your disposal for removing them. Before you can use the weapons, however, you need to understand them and assess which are the most effective.

You may download Microsoft's free Bata Spyware remover at: http://www.microsoft.com/spyware

Also, view the video and read the information on how to avoid getting spyware on your home computer Microsoft provides at this site.

We also suggest another free spyware remover "Ad-Aware" you may use if you wish at:

Java setting could also prevent WebCT features from working properly.
You must have your browser Java script setting activated to allow Java scripts to be read. This could cause the same problem as indicated above with the popup eliminators. Check your browser settings according to WebCT help information on Tuning your Internet browser at the link below.

Viruses
Do you think you might have a virus?  Many issues are related to viruses.  Take a look at Trend Micro's virus feed.
