PTC Student at the McCormick Center

Serving Students in McCormick

The McCormick County Center brings quality higher education a few miles closer to residents of McCormick County. On the outside, the center is a charming log cabin, but on the inside, visitors will discover a state-of-the art facility where students may take part in credit or non-credit courses in a traditional classroom setting, via satellite or two-way video.

Most student services are also provided at the Center including financial aid, placement testing, career counseling and registration. Students may also pay fees and buy books at the center.

Agreement between PTC and McCormick Saves Students Time and Money

Photo Caption: Dr. Sandra Calliham, left, superintendent for McCormick School District, and Dr. Lex Walters, president of Piedmont Technical College, met March 23 to sign an articulation agreement that allows high school students in the building construction curriculum to earn college credit while completing courses at the high school level. By not having to repeat similar courses at the college level, the agreement saves students both time and money.

An articulation agreement signed between Piedmont Technical College and McCormick School District will allow high school students in the building construction curriculum to earn college credit while completing courses at the high school level. By not having to repeat similar courses at the college level, the agreement saves students both time and money.

Signed on March 23 by Dr. Lex Walters, PTC president, and Dr. Sandra Calliham, superintendent for McCormick School District, the agreement recognizes the correlations in the building construction technology (BCT) curriculum at the high school and college levels.

BCT instructors from PTC and McCormick School District developed a set of matching competencies. If a student masters these competencies, earns a grade of “B” or better and is recommended in writing by his or her instructors, he or she can earn college credit hours upon enrolling at Piedmont Tech.

New Members Inducted in PTK

Forty-five new members were recently inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society at Piedmont Technical College. Phi Theta Kappa was established in 1918 to honor two-year college students and boasts more than 1,100 chapters today. The Carolinas region includes 68 active chapters in the two-state area. Piedmont Tech’s Omega Chi chapter became the first among South Carolina’s technical colleges in 1974.

McCormick members are Tiffany Brown of Calhoun Falls and Joanna Willis of Parksville.

For the eleventh consecutive year, the college’s Omega Chi chapter was once again named a Five-Star Chapter at the Phi Theta Kappa Regional Convention in Clemmons, N.C. The chapter also received the Leadership Hallmark Award, the Service Hallmark Award and the Best Use of the Honors Topic Award.
The group received honorable mention as a Distinguished Chapter in the following categories: Scholarship Hallmark Award, Yearbook Award and Website Award. Members Karen Holland of Ware Shoals, Teresa Wilson of Hodges and Gerald Burton of Greenwood were named to the Carolinas Region Hall of Honor. Advisors Evelyn Beck and David Rosenbaum received the Horizon Award, given to senior advisors who have reached new levels of achievement in Phi Theta Kappa programs.
