Emergency Medical Technician


This certificate provides introductory didactic and experiential learning outcomes to successfully provide the scope of care of the Emergency Medical Technician. This is a one semester certificate program.

Advisement Information

Criteria for enrollment into EMS 105 & 106 include:

  • 18 years old by the first day of class
  • No felony conviction
  • Ability to lift 125 lbs.
  • Initiate Hepatitis B series by the first day of class
  • RDG 100 and MAT 032/012 or equivalent placement test scores; higher level English or math would be acceptable

In addition to college tuition and fees for 9 credit hours, students will be assessed the following fees:

  • Lab fee - $20.00
  • Insurance - $25.00
  • Background Check - $47.50
  • Drug Screening - $35.00
  • Note:  Emergency Medical Technician certificate is eligible for Lottery Tuition Assistance.  It is not eligible for Title IV funding (PELL, Loans).  Completion of FAFSA is not required (FAFSA Waiver must be submitted).

Supplies and Uniform Requirements:

  • Students need to have a large 3-ring binder during Orientation
  • Later, a resuscitation mask will be needed for CPR, and a blood pressure cuff and stethoscope will be needed for patient assessment.
  • Clinicals require leather, closed toe shoes, dark pants (no jeans) and a light colored polo shirt with no insignia.  A PTC name badge will be worn during clinicals.

Certification Information:

  • Practical exam fee is $100, payable to Midlands EMS Management at least one week prior to the exam date, and $70 payable to NREMT prior to scheduling the  written exam at a Pearson-Vue test center.
  • After passing both the practical and written exam, there is a $25 fee for fingerprinting and background check prior to receiving state certification.
