What is an advisor?

Your academic advisor is a faculty or staff member assigned to help you map out your academic plans and meet your goals.

Philosophy of Academic Advising

At Piedmont Technical College academic advising is viewed as a continuous interactive process involving students and advisors to clarify educational and life goals. It involves the student's entire college experience--from intake to goal attainment. It is an instructional process that enables students to become self-sufficient and take ownership of their own education by considering the major dynamics of their lives and helping them organize their educational process.

Your advisor can…

  • Provide information about courses, program offerings, and career choices.

  • Share information about opportunities in your major and intended career field (e.g. internships and service-learning opportunities).

  • Acquaint you with campus resources and services.

  • Help you plan a course of study based on your aptitudes, life goals, career interests, academic performance, and frequency of course offerings.

To gain the most from your advisor, you should…

  • Make appointments by phone, e-mail, or office sign-up sheets.

  • Keep appointments promptly, and if unable to keep a scheduled appointment, notify your advisor.

  • Discuss academic and career-related needs and seek additional help as your advisor suggests.

  • Seek assistance in decision-making rather than expect the advisor to make decisions.

  • Follow through with appropriate action after each advising session.

  • Recognize that you are ultimately responsible for knowing and fulfilling all degree requirements and for meeting academic deadlines and financial obligations.
