Computer ClipThere are three fields of study in Computer Technology; Programming, Networking, and Internet. Graduates of Computer Technology will be prepared for a career in the information technology world.

Duties
Graduates in this field may be required to:

  • plan, design, and develop programming applications or network systems

  • program in languages such as Visual Basic, Java, C++, HTML, Dreamweaver, or SQL

  • create and host web applications

Working Conditions
Graduates in this field commonly experience:

  • work inside; office, computer rooms

  • work under stress to meet deadlines

  • considerable paperwork

  • overtime / night / weekend hours sometimes necessary

  • work in cooperation with others

  • work with direct supervision

Physical Demands

  • light lifting (50 lbs or less)

Characteristics & Temperament
Graduates in this field should have:

  • excellent communication skills -- writing and speaking

  • ability to work with data (numbers, symbols, ideas, concepts)

  • ability to work well with people / diverse population

  • ability to reason and make judgments

  • ability to "catch on" quickly

  • attention to detail / proofread quickly and effectively

  • ability to follow procedure

  • responsibility

  • self-discipline / self-motivation

Employment Outlook
Employment statistics for PTC graduates between 2002 and 2007, who found jobs in this field, are as follows:

  • salary average: $26,570

  • salary range: $15,000 - 52,500

  • 75% placement rate for 2002-2007 graduates

  • competitive job market

  • entry level positions: programmer, help desk, network technician, IT technician

  • possible advancement to computer analyst with experience

  • employment in cities and towns of all sizes
