Duties
Graduates in this field may be required to:

  • transfer human remains from the place of death to the funeral home

  • sanitize, disinfect, temporarily preserve and restore human body remains

  • meet with a family and make funeral arrangements

Working Conditions
Graduates in this field commonly experience:

  • work in funeral home / mortuary, hospital pathology lab

  • work with deceased persons who have contagious diseases

  • lifting (mechanical devices can be used to help with lifting)

  • work unsupervised

Characteristics & Temperament
Graduates in this field should have:

  • ability to work with people of various cultures

  • attention to detail

  • caring, sensitive, empathetic attitude

  • self-discipline

  • good oral and written communication skills

Employment statistics for 2002-2007 PTC graduates, who found jobs in this field are as follows:

  • salary average:  $29,100

  • salary range:  $14,500 - 50,000

  • placement rate:  87%

  • nationwide, Funeral Directors/Embalmers are expected to be in good demand for the next several years.
