Frequently Asked Questions

Since I do not have to have a degree to be employed as a police or correctional officer, how would a degree benefit me?

Most police and correctional agencies do not currently require a degree.  However, many police agencies do pay a higher salary to those possessing higher education.  Also, the more education a person has, the greater the prospects for promotion.  We often use the phrase "a college education will not make a good police officer, but it will make a good police officer a better officer."

Must I attend the police or corrections academy in order to be a police or corrections officer?

Yes, both the law enforcement and corrections fields require successful completion of the academy.

When may a person attend the police/corrections academy?

You may attend the academy when sponsored.  This means that you must first be employed by a police/corrections agency.  You will then attend the appropriate academy and upon successful completion, you will become a certified officer.
