Frequently Asked Questions

When do nursing programs begin?

Enrollment in nursing courses is limited, and enrollment only takes place at certain times of the year.  Students should learn the requirements of the specific programs in which they are interested.  Students may register, however, for non-nursing required courses, such as English, Mathematics or Computer courses.

Is it possible to work and earn a nursing degree at the same time?

The time commitment for nursing programs is very demanding.  Depending on the program, clinicals may be scheduled at health care facilities in Abbeville, Anderson, Greenwood, Laurens or Newberry Counties, and students will be required to participate in 8 or 12 hour shifts, second and weekend shifts.  It is, therefore, often difficult to complete the program while holding a full-time job.

Where are clinicals held?

Depending on the program, clinicals may be scheduled in Abbeville, Anderson, Greenwood, Laurens or Newberry Counties, and students are required to participate in 8 or 12 hour shifts, second and weekend shifts.

Will I see blood?

Students should be prepared for exposure to vomit, blood, urine, feces and other body fluids.

Will I be exposed to contagious diseases?

Students will be exposed to contagious diseases, however, universal precautions are taught in all curriculums to keep students safe.

What academic expectations should I know about?

Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA.

In order to provide minimal, safe health care to individuals, the lowest acceptable grade for all nursing and science courses is "C" (75%).  A final theory grade of 75% minimum, and a satisfactory clinical evaluation are necessary for completion of nursing courses.  Those students who receive a theory grade of "C" or above but have an unsatisfactory clinical evaluation will receive a grade of "D" for the course and will not be able to continue in the nursing sequence.

Students are only given two attempts to complete the programs.

What do I need to know about insurance?

All students are required to carry professional liability insurance.  This insurance covers the person only in the clinical area while in the student role.  Liability protection is obtained through Piedmont Technical College.  The cost is approximately $20 per year and will be assessed each semester.  The amount of coverage through the group insurance policy is $300,000.

Do I need to provide personal health information?

Each student must maintain acceptable health status including documentation of yearly tuberculosis screening/CPR and updated prescription/non-prescription health status form.  The Health Assessment Form is to be completed by students and their personal physician or nurse practitioner on the date specified by the student's advisor.  Failure to complete this form accurately will result in dismissal from the program.  All information will be kept confidential.  A printable copy of the Health Assessment is available to users with the free Acrobat Reader plug-in.
