Commencement at Piedmont Technical College Honors Graduates

December 16, 2014

Fall Graduation 2014The James Medford Family Event Center at Piedmont Technical College welcomed more than 250 Piedmont Technical College graduates for two commencement ceremonies to celebrate their accomplishments.

Dr. Ray Brooks, president, welcomed graduates, family and guests to celebrate the accomplishments of the graduates.

“The students here tonight have realized a milestone within a dream,” Brooks said. “We are proud to be here to celebrate with you and encourage you to keep doing the things you’ve done to be successful.”

Brooks was followed by the commencement speakers. During the afternoon ceremony for Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, health science and nursing graduates were addressed by Wilda Hylton, an Associate in Arts graduate from Greenwood; and April Alexander, a practical nursing major from Ninety Six.

Hylton wanted to be a wife and mother and thought she didn’t need an education. As time went on, she wanted something more for herself but she was afraid of the costs of a college education. A Piedmont Tech billboard provided the inspiration she needed to take the first step.

“I had never really noticed the billboard before, but it grabbed my attention that day,” Hylton said. “Here I am, two years later, proud of my accomplishment.”

Alexander’s entry into Piedmont Tech started off a little rocky. She applied to the associate degree program, but was not accepted. She was accepted in the practical nursing program and it proved to be the path she needed.

“I believe what the Good Book tells us – all in God’s time,” Alexander said. “Not being accepted into the ADN program and having to drive to another county was not something I was looking forward to doing for a year, but it turned out to be one of the most beneficial things in my life. I think now is my time just as it is yours.”

Graduates at the evening ceremony for business and information technology, public service, industrial and engineering technologies were addressed by two graduating students – Carrie Lennox, a business major from Gray Court; and Kelly Arrington, a criminal justice graduate from Batesburg.

Lennox shared the story of the loss of her mentor. Her role model instilled in her the desire to become more than what she was.

“She made sure I understood life is hard and getting where you want takes work,” Lennox said. “’You don’t get what you wish for, you get what you work for’ is a phrase my fellow graduates and I identify with for if we had all been wishing instead of working, we wouldn’t be here.”

Arrington, a victim of domestic violence, came to Piedmont Tech to pursue a criminal justice degree so she could help others. She shared the gratification of completion with her fellow graduates.

“I look at you and I see pride on your faces, success in your eyes and joy in a few of your tears,” Arrington said. “We all came here on a different path. Now, as we move forward on our own individual path, we take a piece of Piedmont Technical College with us.”

Several graduates were recognized for highest academic achievement within their counties of residence.

The winners by their counties of residence and their majors were:  Abbeville: Crystal Wilson, administrative office technology, accounting concentration; Edgefield: Hannah Smiley, AOT, medical billing and coding concentration; and Sarah Smiley, AOT, medical billing and coding concentration; Greenwood:  James Matthews, industrial electronics technology and mechatronics technology; and Amy Parsons, AOT, medical billing and coding; Laurens:  Robert Haggard, welding; McCormick: Bonnie Noble, computer technology, networking concentration; Newberry:  Daniel Parker, computer technology, programming concentration; and Saluda:  Wanda Shull, AOT, accounting concentration.

Presenting this year’s graduates was Andy Omundson, associate vice president for student affairs. Certificates, diplomas and associate degrees were conferred by Brooks and Dr. Jack Bagwell, vice president for academic affairs, with assistance from board chairman Y. J. Ahn; Dr. Bradley Griggs, dean of Arts and Sciences; Dr. Jerry Alewine, dean of health science; Tara Harris, dean of nursing; Sissy Copeland, dean of business, information technologies and public service; and David Kibler, interim dean of engineering and industrial technologies.

The macebearer was Ann Allen, faculty senate president. The mace was designed by members of the faculty and staff and presented to the college in 1991 by PTC’s Alumni Association. Music was provided by Emerald City Brass. Rev. Nicholas Beasley, rector at Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in Greenwood, delivered the invocation and benediction.

PLEASE NOTE:  PIEDMONT TECHNICAL COLLEGE’S DECEMBER 2014 GRADUATES AND THEIR AREAS OF STUDY ARE LISTED BELOW.

Piedmont Tech shares in the well-deserved pride our graduates feel in their accomplishments.  To meet the printing deadlines required for production of the program and to maximize use of graduates’ names in area media, information is compiled a minimum of two weeks in advance of commencement exercises.  For that reason, names of students who fail to meet graduation requirements may be included.  Conversely, names of students who met those requirements after the print deadline may be omitted.  We regret any embarrassment or inconvenience these schedules may cause.
