Eaton Hydraulics, Personal Pathways Invites Educators to
“Return to Industry”
Visit is meant to help
educators understand educational needs of potential
future employees of Eaton
GREENWOOD, S.C. (March 12, 2008) – On Friday, March
14, Personal Pathways to Success will take 12 local high
school counselors and administrators to visit Eaton
Hydraulics to learn about the plant, what Eaton
employees do and understand what education and skills
are necessary for jobs at the plant.
The
half-day workshop, which begins at 9 a.m., is designed
to give the Upper Savannah area’s guidance counselors
and career development facilitators an experience in the
machine tooling business. The training will not only
explain to the educators what Eaton needs future
employees to know, but it will show them as well.
“We
anticipate it will be an eye-opening experience for
these predominately female educators to ‘walk in the
shoes’ of a machine tool technician, a primarily male
occupation,” said Cynthia Pitts, Upper Savannah Regional
Education Center Coordinator for Personal Pathways. “The
educators will tour the plant and will be able to ask
questions of the machine operators.”
The
visit is one of the ways that Personal Pathways is
bringing local businesses and education together to
improve education and thereby, economic development.
“Economic development and education are dependent upon
one another. By promoting partnerships such as the one
that Eaton is developing with the local schools, the
entire community will benefit,” said Pitts.
“The
idea is for educators to understand at a deeper level
what skills are needed for such jobs,” said Linda
Sheffield, Director of the Piedmont Education and
Business Alliance (PEBA). “That knowledge will allow
them to return to the classroom and be able to speak
from experience about these jobs with their students.
Counselors will have first-hand knowledge of the plant,
its culture and its jobs.”
Brent
Parris, Human Resources Manager for the plant, is
excited about the partnership. “Working with Personal
Pathways and PEBA has really helped us build
relationships
with
the local schools. By helping the educators understand
what we do, we’re defining what we expect from our
future employees, who are their students now. In the
end, we receive better trained employees – and
ambassadors for Eaton in our community.”
The
visit was facilitated by the Upper Savannah Regional
Education Center of Personal Pathways to Success with
support from the Piedmont Education and Business
Alliance and the Greenwood Partnership Alliance. The
visit is the second planned at Eaton; the first was held
in late January for middle school guidance counselors
and 28 attended, representing eight local school
districts.
It is
hoped
that Eaton Hydraulics will be viewed as a model for
other businesses to become more involved with education
partnerships, such as work based learning opportunities
for students.

The Piedmont Education
and Business Alliance in partnership with the State
Department of Education will offer one-day Contextual
Teaching and Learning Training on April 17, 2008 at

contextual teaching and learning and application of
contextual teaching and learning. Ms. Rachel Gunby
will facilitate the training.
According to the
Education and Economic Development Act, all middle and
high school teachers are to receive contextual teaching
training. Contextual teaching is hands-on
