Student and Alumni Profiles

Piedmont Technical College students come from wide-ranging backgrounds—from first time college students, to four-year college graduates coming back to school to learn a new skill. But they’re united in their drive to improve their lives through education. These are a few of their stories.

    Bohland said every open door she has experienced began when she enrolled at Piedmont Technical College. “Because I started at Piedmont Tech, I have a lot of options available,” she said. “Life gives you a thousand opportunities. You only have to take one.”

    “I’m trying to be a positive role model for my son and an advocate for those who have given up in life,” Sims said. “I try to reach out to a lot of youth and even older people to let them know to never give up. The easiest thing to do is to give up.”

    Sharon Calliham has found her passion in helping people. As a registered respiratory therapist working in home health, she gets to fuel that passion each day. “I love the personal interaction with the patients,” she said. “They become part of my family.”

    Jared Roach has found a way to put his mechanical abilities to good use. “As long as there are businesses that need equipment, there will be a need for machinists to make the parts,” said Roach. “The training you get from the instructors at Piedmont Tech will prepare you with the basics for what you will see in the field.”

    Kenny Price had his foot in the door with Burnstein von Seelen even before he completed his machine tool technology degree at Piedmont Technical College. The Abbeville company took Price on as an apprentice in the Tool and Die division, which has now led to a full-time position with the company.

    Lee graduated from PTC in 2002 and began working for a local heating and cooling company. With his business degree and HVAC degree, he decided to strike out on his own in 2009. He is now the owner and operator of Lee’s Heating and Cooling. “After graduating, I gained the experience I needed to go out on my own,” he said. “The company is doing great and we are staying busy.”
