Piedmont Technical College Honors Graduates during Commencement

May 30, 2017

The James Medford Family Event Center at Piedmont Technical College welcomed more than 300 Piedmont Technical College graduates for two commencement ceremonies to celebrate their accomplishments.

Dr. Ray Brooks, president, welcomed graduates, family and guests to celebrate the accomplishments of the graduates.

“The one thing you all have in common is you stayed the course and crossed the finish line,” Brooks said. “But the finish line just got moved tonight. And the next time you get a degree or award, it will be moved again. But the common ability you now have is that you are independent, self-directed learners.”

Brooks was followed by the commencement speakers. During the afternoon ceremony for Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, health science and nursing, graduates were addressed by Virginia Cannon, an Associate in Arts graduate from Ninety Six; and Michelle Burns, an associate degree nursing major from Newberry.

Cannon began her experiences with Piedmont Tech as a Middle College student at Ninety Six High School. She plays volleyball, basketball and runs track for the Wildcats, but she was looking for something a little more demanding. She shared the reason for that desire – watching her older sister, Abbe, become the first dual enrollment student at PTC to complete her associate degree before she completed high school. She challenged the graduates to remember they are being watched.

“You and I set goals and chased them until completed,” she said. “Others may have been watching us as we worked hard to complete these goals. Perhaps we have inspired some of them to chase their own goals.”

Burns shared her lifelong desire to be a nurse, a goal she put on hold to raise a family. When her children reached their teens, she made the decision to step out of her comfort zone and return to college to pursue that goal. She compared the journey to that of a baby eagle.

“The first four semesters of this journey, our mother eagles have padded our nest. They’ve nurtured, they’ve nourished us so that we can become strong,” she said. “This past semester has been spent slowly and lovingly removing the comforts and preparing us to thrive on our own. And here we stand, on the edge of our nest, ready to soar.”

Graduates at the evening ceremony for business and information technology, public service, industrial and engineering technologies were addressed by two graduating students – Samantha Hollingsworth, an accounting graduate from Greenwood; and Kenneth McDaniel, a building construction technology major from Whitmire.

Hollingsworth always dreamed of opening her own clothing store and she didn’t see a need for a college education. But, her parents encouraged her to enroll in business classes, and her father urged her to include accounting classes. The experience not only helped prepare her for what is to come, it put her on the path to her dreams.

“I’m glad I chose to come to Piedmont Tech. With financial aid, scholarships and other opportunities out there, I am graduating with zero college debt,” she said. “I am happy to say my dream has come true. Last month, I launched my own online website for my clothing boutique, Fancy Ferrara.”

McDaniel never thought he would return to school after graduating from high school 35 years ago. But, after being laid off for the second time in seven years, he knew he needed to do something different. He encouraged the graduates to continue to move forward.

“As we leave here tonight, remember that we can do anything we set our mind to and it’s never too late to make changes in our lives,” he said. “If you’re in a rut, there’s nothing wrong with carving out a new life and a new future if that’s what makes you happy.”

Several graduates were recognized for highest academic achievement within their counties of residence.

The winners by their counties of residence and their majors were:  Abbeville: James Allison, welding; Greenwood:  Virginia Cannon, Associate in Arts; Dontavious Cooper, heating, ventilation and air conditioning technology; Sarah Driscoll, administrative office technology, medical coding and billing concentration; Claudine Feussi, computer technology, programming concentration; and Debra Robinson, computer technology, information technology concentration; Laurens:  Ashley Alewine, administrative office technology, legal concentration; McCormick: Leah Anthony, Associate in Arts; Newberry:  Grace Alger, Associate in Arts; and Scott Hunter, building construction technology; and Saluda: Andrew Owens, Associate in Arts and Associate in Science; and William Shealy, machine tool technology.

Presenting this year’s graduates was Andy Omundson, associate vice president for student affairs. Certificates, diplomas and associate degrees were conferred by Brooks and Dr. Jack Bagwell, vice president for academic affairs, with assistance from board vice chairman Jane Herlong and board secretary Cherry Brown; Dr. Bradley Griggs, dean of Arts and Sciences; Dr. Jerry Alewine, dean of health science; Tara Harris, dean of nursing; Sissy Copeland, dean of business, information technologies and public service; and David Kibler, dean of engineering and industrial technologies.

The macebearer was Clay Sprouse, faculty senate president. The mace was designed by members of the faculty and staff and presented to the college in 1991 by PTC’s Alumni Association. Music was provided by Emerald City Brass. Rev. Lebbie Ligon, pastor of Mt. Zion AME Church in McCormick, delivered the invocation and benediction.

PLEASE NOTE:  PIEDMONT TECHNICAL COLLEGE’S MAY 2017 GRADUATES AND THEIR AREAS OF STUDY ARE LISTED BELOW.

Piedmont Tech shares in the well-deserved pride our graduates feel in their accomplishments.  To meet the printing deadlines required for production of the program and to maximize use of graduates’ names in area media, information is compiled a minimum of two weeks in advance of commencement exercises.  For that reason, names of students who fail to meet graduation requirements may be included.  Conversely, names of students who met those requirements after the print deadline may be omitted.  We regret any embarrassment or inconvenience these schedules may cause.
