Piedmont Technical College Recognizes Graduates

May 13, 2016

The James Medford Family Event Center at Piedmont Technical College was the setting for the culmination of many dreams for the more than 300 Piedmont Technical College graduates who took center stage in two commencement ceremonies.

Dr. Ray Brooks, president, welcomed graduates, family and guests to celebrate the accomplishments of the graduates.

“Piedmont Technical College is celebrating its 50th year this year. We’re into our third generation, and sometimes our fourth generation, of students who have come through the doors of this college seeking a better life for themselves and their families,” Brooks said. “This is not the end of your journey of learning. You leave here as lifelong, independent learners.”

Brooks was followed by the commencement speaker Eddie Brown, Jr., a 2007 graduate of the Piedmont Technical College respiratory care program.

“This is a special occasion that we are gathered for as we are celebrating Piedmont Technical College’s 50 years of providing the community with positive and productive citizens,” Brown said.

Brown shared his story of growing up in poverty and moving from his home in Atlanta to South Carolina in 1989. Through his struggles, he said he always felt a calling to help people, instilled in him by his mother. He reminded the graduates that in order to change themselves for the better, they must remember they are their brother’s keeper.

“As I learned from my mother long ago, if you help someone, don’t expect anything in return,” he said. “Gratification comes in knowing that the service you have provided has helped progress someone’s life in a positive direction.”

Several graduates were recognized for highest academic achievement within their counties of residence.

The winners by their counties of residence and their majors were:  Abbeville: Jerri Smith, accounting; Edgefield: Tammy Kersey, administrative office technology; Greenwood:  Shawn Anderson, computer technology; Felicia Humphrey, associate in arts; and Tammy Kullnat, associate in arts; Laurens:  Keandria Rhode, associate in arts; and Robert Strawhorn, machine tool technology; McCormick: Joel Boley, III, human services; Malaurie Hullings, electronic engineering technology; and Bradley Jones, III, associate in arts; Newberry:  Elizabeth Hedgepeth, associate in arts; Jason Osborne, computer technology; and Mary Jo Rikabi, administrative office technology; and Saluda:  Seth Hartley, horticulture; and Ashley Owens, diversified agriculture and associate in science-honors.

Presenting this year’s graduates was Andy Omundson, associate vice president for student affairs. Certificates, diplomas and associate degrees were conferred by Brooks and Dr. Jack Bagwell, vice president for academic affairs, with assistance from board chairman Y. J. Ahn; Dr. Bradley Griggs, dean of Arts and Sciences; Dr. Jerry Alewine, dean of health science; Tara Harris, dean of nursing; Sissy Copeland, dean of business, information technologies and public service; and David Kibler, interim dean of engineering and industrial technologies.

The macebearer was Allen Barbare, faculty senate president. The mace was designed by members of the faculty and staff and presented to the college in 1991 by PTC’s Alumni Association. Music was provided by Emerald City Brass. The Reverend Dr. Danny Webb, pastor of Old Mount Zion Baptist Church, Epworth Community in Greenwood, delivered the invocation and benediction.

PLEASE NOTE:  PIEDMONT TECHNICAL COLLEGE’S MAY 2016 GRADUATES AND THEIR AREAS OF STUDY ARE LISTED BELOW.

Piedmont Tech shares in the well-deserved pride our graduates feel in their accomplishments.  To meet the printing deadlines required for production of the program and to maximize use of graduates’ names in area media, information is compiled a minimum of two weeks in advance of commencement exercises.  For that reason, names of students who fail to meet graduation requirements may be included.  Conversely, names of students who met those requirements after the print deadline may be omitted.  We regret any embarrassment or inconvenience these schedules may cause.
