- Before You Borrow
Student loans can help pay educational expenses, but loans must be repaid. Before borrowing, students should consider their educational costs, other financial aid available, and how much they actually need.
Students are encouraged to borrow only what is necessary to meet educational expenses, explore grants and scholarships before borrowing, understand the terms and responsibilities associated with their loans, and keep track of their total student loan debt while enrolled.
- Federal Student Loan Counseling
Students who borrow federal Direct Loans are required to complete applicable federal loan counseling.
- Entrance Counseling
Entrance Counseling helps first-time federal student loan borrowers understand the responsibilities associated with borrowing, including loan terms, interest, repayment obligations, budgeting, and the consequences of delinquency and default.
- Exit Counseling
Students who graduate, withdraw, or drop below half-time enrollment are required to complete Exit Counseling, as applicable. Exit Counseling helps borrowers understand their outstanding federal student loan debt and provides information about repayment plans, loan servicers, deferment, forbearance, forgiveness options, delinquency, and default.
- Know What You Owe
Federal student loan borrowers can use StudentAid.gov to review their federal student loans, identify their loan servicer, and access repayment information.
Students are encouraged to regularly review how much they have borrowed, who services their loans, when repayment begins, and the repayment options available to them.
- Preparing for Repayment
Understanding repayment options before leaving college can help students prepare to successfully manage their student loan debt. Federal Student Aid provides tools that allow borrowers to review repayment options and estimate potential monthly payments.
Students who are concerned about making their loan payments should contact their federal student loan servicer as soon as possible to discuss available options and avoid delinquency or default.
- SCWINS Financial Literacy Requirement
Students receiving SCWINS may be required to complete an additional eligibility requirement based on the option selected on their SCWINS affidavit.
Students who select the financial literacy course option may use Jurni to satisfy this requirement. Jurni provides self-paced financial wellness education designed to help students strengthen their financial knowledge and develop skills for making informed financial decisions.
Students completing Jurni for their SCWINS financial literacy requirement should follow the instructions provided by the Financial Aid Office.
