Continuing Education Program Receives Recognition

Piedmont Technical College’s Economic Development and Continuing Education division has been recognized for their outstanding work with registered behavior technicians (RBT) by the South Carolina Association for Higher Continuing Education (SCAHCE).

The RBT program received the SCAHCE Cooperative Program Award. The award recognizes effective cooperative programs in continuing education among two or more educational institutions and /or state agencies, non-profits, public sector, or private sector partners.

“There was a necessity for registered behavior technicians at Project Hope Foundation Inc. when they opened a location in Greenwood,” said Kassie Hall, program manager. “This class was started in partnership with Project Hope because they reached out to us with their need.”

The RBT course began in March and runs for approximately 12 weeks. Those who take the class learn the principles of applied behavior analysis. ABA can be applied in many different environments but is most frequently associated with therapies for children with autism spectrum disorder. RBTs work one-on-one with children and receive supervision from a board certified behavior analyst.

“One of the benefits of this program for continuing education is that it offers something different for people who are not interested in health care or manufacturing as a career,” Hall said. “This provides a different option with the potential for upward mobility.”

“Adding a course such as the RBT class is really a win-win for our students and the community,” said Rusty Denning, associate vice president for Economic Development and Continuing Education. “This program meets a need and it’s an honor to be recognized for the work we have done and continue to do with Project Hope.”
