Wages/Salary: Internship is paid and the intern will be paid at the beginning, mid-point, and end of completion of internship. The first payment of $1,000 will be released once the signed contract agreements is finalized. A second payment of $1,500 will be released when the student is halfway through their internship and a written summary of their work and accomplishments has been approved by the utility and DEED administrator. The final $1,500 will be paid upon satisfactory completion of the internship, including submission of a final report, summary abstract and any other deliverables promised in the application.

Requirements:

The internship is provided through American Public Power Association Deed program so the Deed program has specific requirements:

  • The student must agree to appear in a brief (1-3 min) video to be submitted to Deed to demonstrate type of work performed.
  • The student must complete a summary abstract once their internship is complete.
  • The student must complete a satisfactory final report once their internship is complete
  • Final reports, abstracts and any other deliverable promised in the application must be reviewed and approved by the utility before being sent to the DEED administrator.

We are currently looking for individuals to work as a Fiber Optic/AMI Technician Intern for the Fall 2022 semester. Our program will give the participant real world experience in fiber installation and maintenance and gain exposure to our AMI and SCADA systems. This internship includes hands-on experience with built-in professional development and potential future full-time career opportunities. The student would be under direct supervision during maintenance and deployment of city fiber on electrical poles. Which includes installation and maintenance of VC's for AMI System, fiber enclosures and cannisters.

Functions:

  • Resolve, repair and install fiber optics systems and ensure that they work properly
  • Examine and replace faulty and old fiber optic cables and organize scheduled maintenance routines
  • Take care of fiber splicing and rectify fiber optic problem areas
  • Develop sensor indicators and conduct timely inspections to make sure that faulty fiber optic system does not destabilize its performance
  • Execute premises cabling and take care of the underground and underwater cabling requirements

Equipment:

  • Fiber trailer, fiber splicing, OTDR, VC's, AMI infrastructure, AMI system (tantalus), fiber enclosures and canisters, work order management system (city works)
