Responsibilities

SCE&G Gas Operations is a family of employees committed to providing the safety of employees and the public through our cost-effective operations by providing quality customer service. SCE&G is looking for a highly motivated and customer focused professional to fill the Apprentice Gas Man position in Charleston, SC. Selected applicant will enter the gas organization as a Gas Man Apprentice with an opportunity to advance to the Journeyman level.

 

Job duties include but are not limited to:

Operation, maintenance and construction of SCE&G’s Gas Distribution System. Lifting of up to 25 pounds repeatedly throughout the day and occasionally lifts of up to 100 pounds.

Constant standing, sitting, or walking, climbing ladders, crawling under houses and in attics, working outdoors in various weather conditions and/or driving 6 to 8 hours daily.

Must be able to work in trenches with mud and water, cutting or joining pipe both inside and outside, using a jackhammer and other heavy equipment to excavate sites for street construction.

Must have the ability to read and apply applicable codes, document compliance activities and, if necessary, wear self-contained breathing apparatus in hazardous environments.

 

Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

High School diploma (from a high school accredited by an organization that is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or one of the entities recognized by the U.S. Department of Education) or GED.

Two-year degree from a technical college is preferred

Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License, Class A within six months of start date.

Must also be routinely available for call out or emergency situations and be able to work overtime as needed.

Must live within 25 miles from assigned work location.

Other Information

This position has been approved by the Department of Labor and the Department of Veterans Affairs as having a Certified Gas Utility Worker Apprenticeship program. Gas Apprentices that have military service and have paid into the GI Bill may be eligible for supplemental compensation through the SC Commission on Higher Education/Veterans Affairs during the course of their apprenticeship.

Hiring range

The starting hourly rate for this position is from $17.17. The actual salary offer for the successful candidate will be based upon a variety of factors including the candidate's experience, education, and other appropriate indicators(s) related to the position.
