borderless, a dynamic endeavor bringing the worlds of media and grassroots organizing together, is seeking a new class of Interns to join us for Summer 2021. We prioritize applicants who seek to uplift and empower voices not often heard on the global stage. Interns will be placed into one of four teams: Network Research, Data Visualization, Communications, or Media Production.
Background: borderless is a movement to unite humanity in a pop culture revolution. We are a global social change network and media channel featuring and connecting people doing amazing things to change the world - ‘show the good in the world in face of the ugly.’ For us, civic responsibility is the new mainstream pop culture. We invest in building a global network of local bureaus and community hubs and producing original, collaborative multimedia content. We believe change happens locally, organically and is driven by people at the front lines. The Network serves as the research and development hub and Productions serves as the media production hub. borderless is created by difrent:, Inc. a social enterprise connecting the world through creative multimedia content.
Network Research:
Interns in the Network Research Team will work closely with the Network Program Manager and the Manager of Cultural Research in building out our global cultural database. In our research, we aim to highlight the issues and assets of different regions around the world, with a keen focus on frontline communities and connectivity. The aim of this research is twofold: first, to map out and build the vast network of partners borderless aims to collaborate with on media content. Second, to create an open-sourced database, which will be featured on our website, for public access to vital information on the global movement of civic engagement sweeping our planet. The ideal Network Research candidate is extremely passionate about civics, global culture, and able to make unique connections while having an eye for finding positivity anywhere. A working knowledge of Google Sheets / Microsoft Excel would also be ideal.
Data Visualization:
Data Visualization Interns will assist in the production of all images, maps, charts, and graphs needed by the borderless team. Tasks will include working on iterations and drafts of a ‘borderless map’ of the world, heavily drawing from the global cultural database referenced above. Interns will also assist in creating images and presentations needed for business-development related purposes; i.e., communicating our vision to investors and to our Advisory Board. Data Visualization Interns will also work closely with the Communications Team in building the path for borderless to have a superb, professional social media presence, worthy of a global media organization. This Intern Team will work most closely with our Executive Director and Co-Founder along with the Network Program Manager. The ideal candidate will have a good command of tech tools such as PowerPoint, Google Slides, Prezi, etc. An interest in or working knowledge of Photoshop and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) would also be ideal.
Communications:
The Communications Team will narrow in on social media, newsletters, editing our website, and contact lists, ensuring that the borderless team has the right presence, information, and tools available to communicate with one another, our partners, the public, and the wider media market- successfully and strategically. Interns will also pay fastidious attention to the nuanced details of borderless’ internal communicative style and organizational structure, with the aim of drafting a final report on the effectiveness of our internal modes of operation. Communications Interns will also work closely with the Media Productions Team, in crafting narratives from our global cultural database. This Team will be led by the Network Program Manager and Executive Director. The ideal candidate is an outstanding speaker and writer, with unmatched attention to detail. Experience with WordPress would also be ideal.
Media Production:
This Intern Team will focus on creating and publishing media content / products to distribute on the wider market. Interns will work closely with the Executive Director, along with our Manager of Content Production , to release our various programs, such as: our web-series, podcasts, docu-series, commercials / teasers, music videos, etc. Media Production Interns will also support initiatives to collaboratively craft narratives with our partners, with the aim of highlighting frontline voices and solutions to global problems which exist on the ground. This will involve developing interview questions, guest lists for shows, etc. The ideal candidate for this Team is creative, knows how to tell a good story, and will bring a knowledge of or an interest in the technology needed to publish world-class media products.
● Unpaid (with the possibility of a small stipend if employed as staff under a future contract).
● 4 - 8 hours/ week. Remote work. (If Intern is based in NYC, in – person meetings 1x/ month).
● In addition to gaining experience with a groundbreaking media project, Interns will receive access to a global network of change makers, letters of recommendation, and continued career support.
