Job Description:

DEPARTMENT:  Coroner

CLASSIFICATION: Deputy Coroner/Clerk I

FUNCTION:  To work under the direction and at the pleasure of the Coroner, investigate death cases to determine cause and manner of death.  To insure that files and mandated records are kept current and accurate.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  Ensure that all required data and records are forwarded to the agencies per S.C. laws in a timely manner.  Document death scene for autopsy.  Responsible for drawing body fluids and collecting evidence from the body and scene in certain cases.  Transport bodies when necessary.  Death notifications and exchange information with all Law Enforcement Agencies, to include local, state, and federal.  Occasional public awareness program speaker.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Must be proficient in the use of computer and typewriter and possess the skills to interact with the public and professional agencies.  Have considerable knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of death investigation with knowledge of current Law Enforcement practices.  Knowledge of the geography of the County and the location of major buildings and roads.  Must be able to prepare accurate oral and written reports.  The ability to deal firmly and tactfully with the public in both adversarial and non-adversarial situations.  Must be physically fit and able to lift/carry heavy weights. Able to function in less than ideal circumstances.

MINIMUM TRAINING & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:  High School Diploma/Equivalent - Must possess computer and typing skills-Law Enforcement experience and/or knowledge of emergency medicine and medical terminology a plus.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Employee must be willing to work nights, weekends, and be on call as required.  Must possess a valid S.C. Driver's License and successfully complete training course per S.C. Statues and Laws. A  Hepatitis B Vaccination is required within 15 days of hire date.
