Requirements:

Minimum requirements include 3 years of gardening or landscape maintenance experience, preferably in public garden or private estate.  An Associates’ degree in horticulture or equivalent educational experiences is a plus.  This position requires bending, stooping, the ability to lift at least 50 pounds, and will demand working from ladders and operate small equipment, like tractor. Must have a valid driver’s license, and willingness to acquire Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator License forklift operator’s training certificate, and aerial lift training.

This individual must have the ability to perform a full range of horticultural tasks and duties with minimum guidance, including weeding, mulching, maintaining, pruning of various woodies and climbers, shearing hedges as well as a good aptitude to operate small-motorized gardening equipment. We are looking for a strong team player with a flexible mindset and the ability to prioritize, plan the maintenance, engage with guests while working, work independently as well as with a wide range of people in a larger team.

The successful candidate will have a passion for horticulture and a desire to pursue professional growth and to keep pace with horticultural practices & developments through hands-on experience and educational opportunities.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to articulate, engage and share their work, knowledge and Longwood’s mission with colleagues and guests.

Longwood Gardens is seeking a full-time Horticulturist for the Outdoor Landscape Division. The Horticulturist will join a skilled team that manages part of Longwood’s historic landscapes, including Open Air Theatre, Flower Garden Walk, Compartment Gardens, Pierce Du Pont House and Peirce’s Woods. This part of the garden offers a unique opportunity to work with an array of hardy and annuals plants from around the world to create seasonal, evolving, aesthetically pleasing spaces for our guest to enjoy. Responsibilities include maintaining and evolving the gardens & landscapes to a high level of horticultural excellence; supporting other team members with seasonal maintenance; supervising and training students and volunteers on horticultural practices and get involvement in other projects across the organization.

Schedule:
The work schedule for this position includes occasional weekend, evening, and holiday work.
