Requirements:

A high school diploma and experience in forest management, forest fire control, law enforcement or nursery and treeimprovement operations. As associate's degree in forestry, agriculture, horticulture, or natural resources may be substituted for the required work experience. Must possess a valid South Carolina driver's license. Criminal background check and drug test are required.


Knowledge of nursery and tree improvement operations. Knowledge of soil maintenance, fertilizers, and farm machinery. Knowledge of use of pesticides. Skill in the operation of mechanized equipment. Ability to communicate effectively. Basic knowledge of computer programs, like Microsoft Office.

Ability to work under limited supervision and to communicate routinely with supervisor concerning goals and accomplishments. Ability to work as a team toward the program's goals in a timely manner.

Must be able to lift, walk, squat, climb and carry objects up to 50 lbs. Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in changing weather conditions.

Position is designated as safety sensitive. Position requires the employee to be subject to pre-employment, random, postincident/accident, reasonable suspicion and rehabilitation monitoring and drug and alcohol testing consistent with SCFC Drug-Free Workplace- CDL Drug and Alcohol Testing.

Job Description:

Under general supervision, the Seed Orchard Technician will assist the Tree Improvement staff in the establishmentand management of seed orchard and progeny tests, to produce genetically superior pine tree seed for reforestationefforts.
- Distribute seedlings to SC Forestry Commission customers.
- Assist with seed orchard management, including mowing, herbicide application, fertilization, and orchard sanitation.
- Assist with progeny test establishment, maintenance, and measurement.
- Assist in cone harvesting and seed extraction and processing.
- Participates in activities and/or projects in support of the agency's mission and performs other duties as required.

Schedule:
Monday-Friday (8:00am-5:00pm) - Temporary Grant

Requires limited overnight travel to establish, maintain, and measure progeny tests.
