Piedmont Technical College students build and donate doghouses to Humane Society of Greenwood

Rachael Ross smiled broadly Thursday as she and other Piedmont Technical College (PTC) students delivered four doghouses to the Humane Society of Greenwood animal shelter.

Ross and 16 of her classmates in the PTC Building Construction Technology program gained valuable experience constructing the doghouses during the recently completed summer term.

But she said the best part of the project was the doghouses’ destination.

“I just love that we are giving back to the community,” said Ross, a second-year student in PTC’s Building Construction Technology program.

Samantha Brooks, executive director of the Humane Society of Greenwood, expressed gratitude about the donation of the doghouses. She said they will be a great addition to the always crowded county animal shelter on Airport Road in Greenwood.

“This is such a kind thing. We appreciate it so much,” she said.

“We have dogs that come in that are outside dogs. They thrive if we let them be in the yard,” Brooks said. “So, if they have a doghouse to protect them, then they’ll be safer, happier and they’ll be protected from the elements.”

Kenneth McDaniel, who directs PTC’s Building Construction Technology program, said his students learned about wood framing, different styles of roofs and how to install to vinyl siding while building the doghouses.

McDaniel also said he is pleased the doghouses will be put to good use.
