A high school diploma, must be at least 21 years of age, and relevant work or program experience. Must possess the ability to provide appropriate teaching, supervision, and discipline of students within a residential setting. Must be willing to take initiative. Must be willing to follow school and department policies. Must exhibit professionalism when interacting with students, parents/guardians, and a community of stakeholders. Value working in a multicultural/diverse environment; communicate effectively verbally and in writing with broad variety of people, including other team members and management. Must be able to work independently and with a group. Ability to provide visual and auditory supervision of residents; demonstrate group leadership and organizational skills; regularly attend scheduled shifts, be punctual for scheduled shifts and meetings and be in a condition suitable for assuming responsibilities for the position; exercise tact, discretion, and judgment in working with a variety of people; and open to constructive feedback and supervision. Applicant must be able to hear, speak audibly, walk, and lift up to 50 lbs. Valid driver’s licenses required.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and experience working with agriculture related industry, youth/high school students, or student services related experience. Previous residential life experience highly preferred

Job Description:

The SC Governor's School for Agriculture at John de la Howe is a state-funded, public, residential high school focused on providing a unique and challenging agricultural education program. Our school, the first statewide program of its kind in the nation, will allow students to receive hands-on training in the fields of agriculture, agribusiness, forestry, land management, food science, and more - all aimed at assessing the needs of modern farms. Our mission is to provide quality agricultural education that will enable its students to be the state’s future leaders in agribusiness, business, and education. The Resident Advisor is there to provide a nurturing and supportive environment and supervision for the residents of the residential halls. Assure resident's basic needs are met including meals, exercise, hygiene, completion of school assignments, and sleep. Monitor activities and whereabouts of residents. Create a healthy living and learning community in the residence hall. Complete and report data to appropriate school staff. Provide feedback that is clear, specific, timely, and respectful. Model healthy interactions and respectful communication with residents and school employees. Teach healthy living skills, conduct recreational, study skills, and social activities to enhance skill acquisition and fun. Work effectively within a team of co-workers, participate in on-call rotation, dispense medication to students, supervise activities, transport students to medical appointments, transport students to off-campus activities, assist with supervision of study times, complete student room inspections, and other residence hall related duties. Attend and engage in department staff meetings. Meet regularly with supervisor and actively participate in professional development.

This is a live-in position in a campus residence hall; staff will be provided with a room and private bathroom in the residence hall and meal plan when students are in residence. Staff are required to sleep in residence on days they are on duty. Typical work schedule will be second shift hours, with some first shift hours required. Some weekend hours will be required for campus events. Position requires a forty hours per week, with some weeks requiring more. No pets allowed in residence.
