MINIMUM AND ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

State Requirements: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and related nursing experience.

Agency Requirements: Licensed to practice as a registered nurse in South Carolina; a bachelor's degree in nursing; an associate's degree in nursing, or a diploma in nursing with at least two years of experience in a relevant clinical area (e.g., pediatric nursing, medical-surgical, or public health nursing).

Special Requirements: Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina  Board of Nursing.  Some positions require a valid driver's license.  Also, some positions require certification in Basic Life Support and/or Basic/Advanced Cardiac Life Support.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Knowledge of principles and practices of nursing and prevention of disease and injury. Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with all levels of personnel. Ability to establish priorities and carry out assignments. Ability to establish the confidence and cooperation of juveniles receiving services. Must remain current in BLS. Functions under the minimal supervision of a Nurse Administrator/Manger I or II; Follows department, state, and federal guidelines, policies and procedures. Must have and maintain a valid South Carolina driver's license. Subject to the possibility of physical assault, property destruction and infections. Must wear personal protective equipment to prevent infection. Must have a phone or pager that DJJ can use to contact for urgent or emergent situations. This position performs job duties relating to the custody, control, transportation, or recapture of juveniles within the jurisdiction of the department of juvenile justice, and the employee may have direct and indirect contact with juveniles within the jurisdiction of the department of juvenile justice. Training applicable to these duties will be provided.

Job Description:

To provide direct nursing care to juveniles receiving services in a secure facility of the Department of Juvenile Justice in accordance with Health Services and Department protocols/standing orders and policies, the SC Nurse Practice Act, and accepted professional nursing standards. Safely administers and documents all medications and treatments as ordered by a physician, dentist, nurse practitioner, or another nurse (when such medications or treatments are written in accordance with approved standing orders or protocols). Ensures follow through of physician/dentist/nurse practitioner orders to include making necessary appointments and arrangements for off campus consultations, procedures, surgery, etc. Uses an electronic health record system to maintain documentation of each encounter with a juvenile. Maintains a safe and sanitary environment and follows basic infection control practices. Relieves a Health Care Coordinator as needed. Assesses the medical and health needs of juveniles during sick call and formulates, implements and evaluates the plan of care in accordance with standing orders and protocols. Refers to appropriate higher level of health care provider when needed. Provides health education to the juveniles as needed. Assists the physician when he/she sees patients; participates in developing plans of care as appropriate. Collects a variety of specimens for ordered laboratory tests. Provides nursing care to juveniles admitted to the Infirmary. Conducts periodic routine health assessments of the juveniles. Actively participates in orientation, training and education of other nursing staff. Rotates nursing on-call duties. Must be able to respond capably to emergencies. Must be able to work any and all shifts if the need arises.  Must be able to work overtime if the need arises. May be required to work in an area other that regular/normal assigned area. Occasionally supervises the activities of SCDJJ temporary or nursing contract agency licensed practical nurses. Performs other related duties as required. 

Schedule:
NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE: Various hours depending on clinic location, to include evenings, weekends, and holidays. 6, 8, & 12 hour shifts available.
