Piedmont Technical College holds “steel signing” event to mark milestone in construction of the Self Regional Healthcare Center for Health Sciences
Piedmont Technical College (PTC) held a “steel signing” event Tuesday to mark completion of the frame for the Self Regional Healthcare Center for Health Sciences.
The college’s leadership, faculty and staff members and students signed a steel beam before a crane hoisted it atop the two-story building on the Greenwood Campus. While the structure’s frame is now in place, construction will continue for several more months.
The $16.1 million facility represents a bold step to address the growing need for healthcare professionals in PTC’s seven-county service area. The 27,000 square-foot building will include 10 simulation rooms, six skills labs with collaborative teaching spaces, a catheterization and echocardiography lab as well as classrooms and computer labs to provide students with high-quality training in real-world conditions.
“We are really excited about what's happening here today,” said PTC President Dr. Hope E. Rivers.
Speaking to the healthcare students who had gathered to sign the beam, Rivers said, “We do this work for you.”
“We do this so that you have the experiences that you need in order to leave Piedmont Technical College, step into a healthcare setting and succeed from day one.”
Self Regional Healthcare is donating $1.3 million worth of equipment for the new facility.
“We are so happy to partner with Piedmont Tech on this project,” said Self Regional Healthcare President and CEO Dr. Matt Logan.
“We would not be able to provide the level of health care that we do for our community without them,” Logan said. “That's just a fact.”
Hogan Construction Group Vice President T. Austin Eckles also spoke at the event.
“We're very excited to be on Piedmont Tech’s campus on this as well as several other projects,” Eckles said. “At this stage of my career, I get much more excited about building new relationships than just simply building buildings. So, thank you for that opportunity.”
