Requirements:

Experience Significant and appropriate work experience in a similar position Valid driver’s license. (CDL a plus) Clean drug test. Required Skills and Abilities Ability to safely operate equipment including, but not limited to, tractors and implements, light construction equipment, and pulling trailers Experience with growing various horticultural crops General carpentry and building skills Ability to operate power tools and mechanical equipment safely Ability to lift 50+ lbs repeatedly is required Ability to work independently and is self-motivated, cooperative and flexible Creative problem-solving skills Positive attitude, dedication, reliability and a great work ethic Ability to recognize weaknesses in self and seek professional development experiences that will serve to strengthen knowledge, skills, and abilities

Job Description:

We are seeking a hard-working individual to help transform our 300+ acre farm into a thriving financially and environmentally sustainable operation as an integral component of the overall Thornwell mission to serve children, families, and communities. Although experience is preferred, we are willing to train someone with at least three years of experience on a farm. Thornwell intends for the farm to be an exemplary model of creative farm-related entrepreneurship, land stewardship, and community development. A 10-year horizon has been created for the farm. Livestock, Specialty Crops, as well as Agritourism have been identified as the 3 primary divisions of the farm ventures Core Responsibilities Become a part of thoughtful planning, and site design of the farm property including overall site layout, feasibility assessment and management of infrastructure improvements. Assist in planning, designing, and implementing sustainable agricultural production systems that improve soil health, enhance natural systems, and increase the aesthetic appeal of the property. Assist in implementing a plan for agritourism and other visitor-related activities that is synergistic with the mix of production systems in place, recognizes the well-being of the residents, and is in harmony with the broader community. Supervise Thornwell youth and volunteers on the farm.

Other duties required by the Director of the Farm or the Assistant Farm Manager. Working Conditions The Farm Associate will be expected to directly participate in all aspects of the farm. This will entail difficult physical labor, getting dirty, and working in uncomfortable weather conditions. Some weekend work will be required.
