Requirements:

A high school diploma and five and one-half (5.5) years of related trades experience; or an
approved acceptable equivalence in accordance with State Human Resources Regulations.
A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL). (Note:) This position requires a valid Class A
Commercial Driver's License. However, applicants without a Class A Commercial Driver's License
will be considered if no qualified applicants with a Class A Commercial Driver's License are
available.
A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement is required within
six (6) months of placement in the position.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Considerable knowledge of tools, equipment and materials used in building maintenance and
construction.

Job Description:

Under general supervision, performs skilled duties in building renovations, building maintenance
and new construction of facilities used by SCDOT employees and the general public of the State
of South Carolina. Serves as crew leader in the absence of the crew foreman. Assumes Trades
Specialist V responsibilities and duties during his or her absence. Directs and/or assigns work
to crew members. Ensures adequate manpower and materials are available to complete the
assigned task. Maintains daily work reporting in HMMS. Performs skilled labor in the
remodeling of existing offices, buildings and sheds which may include removal of old materials
such as doors, floors, windows, etc. and installing paneling, windows, floors and floor tile,
ceiling tile, doors, etc.; replaces roof shingles, boxing and guttering; pouring concrete slabs and
foundations, laying brick and concrete blocks, framing roof trusses and installing vinyl siding.
Performs skilled labor on new construction projects which may include digging footings, pouring
concrete footings and foundations, framing walls and roofs, installing doors, windows, attic
vents, insulation, flooring roofing felt, shingles, etc. Erects metal buildings of all sizes. Assures
all ADA and building codes are met. Figures quantity and quality of materials needed for new
construction and/or remodeling projects. Inspects material to ensure good quality. Procures
project materials, tools, supplies, and services in strict adherence to State and Departmental
procurement policies. Operates all types of heavy equipment including tandem dump trucks,
backhoe, loader and forklift necessary for grading and digging foundations and the movement
and handling of heavy building materials. Assist in inclement weather activities and other
emergency situations, some requiring work after normal business hours, on weekends and
holidays. Performs other related duties as directed by supervisor.
