Occupations Involved: The inmates work under the classifications of painter, forklift operator, material handler, and administrative clerk. The painters prepare surfaces for painting, positions components, adjust conveyor line speeds, electrostatically apply epoxy-based powder coating, and cure components in baking ovens. The inmates maintain the spray guns and monitor and adjust compressed air systems.
Knowledge and Responsibility of Subordinates
Skill and Knowledge: The inmates do all surface preparation tasks to accept paint including cleaning, media blasting, sanding, grinding, and polishing surfaces. The workers ensure that proper levels of iron phosphate are on the products being painted, they apply paint utilizing electrostatic spray guns, and they inspect the work to ensure proper thickness and evenness of application rates are followed. The work involves lifting, carrying, stacking, and packaging work. The inmates must be in good physical condition and must be able to stand for extended periods. Responsibility: The inmates work under the guidance of the Auto Body Technician Supervisor who provides the instructions for performing the work assigned to them at the established levels of quantity and quality. The inmates may be assigned to work with a more experienced inmate to achieve the necessary job skills required. The Auto Body Technician Supervisor monitors the work performance and training. He/she provides direction and support to ensure that any learning curve is followed within guidelines. Performs the duties of Project Manager for project execution of Services contracts specifically supporting program management. Represents the company at kickoff and other required in person and telephonic meetings to ensure contract delivery. Tracks and submits “Acceptance Letters” to clients and Controller to facilitate timely invoicing processes. Is responsible for all aspects of projects assigned – cradle to grave.
The Auto Body Technician Supervisor must possess knowledge in the cleaning, surface preparation, and coating application for a wide variety of metal types and sizes of components and must be well versed in processes for applying a variety of different coating types and surface preparation media. The incumbent must possess knowledge and skills in collision repair techniques. The incumbent is responsible for technical and administrative supervision of inmate workers who use trades and labor skills to repair collision damage, apply paint to metal products using chemical filtration procedures, iron phosphate application, electrostatic coating procedures, surface preparation, and oven curing temperatures and times according to required specifications and deadlines. The incumbent is responsible for the training of inmate workers in collision repair, proper coating, and preparation techniques.
