A high school diploma and at least two (2) years of relevant experience that is directly related to the area. An associate degree or higher in horticulture or a related field may substitute for the required work experience.


Additional Requirements:

  • Knowledgeable in all areas of landscape maintenance including arboriculture, IPM, and equipment operation. 
  • Familiarity with irrigation repair. Knowledge of basic computer programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel. 
  • Ability to obtain a category three (3) SC Pesticide Applicator's License. 
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions. 
  • Ability to initiate work tasks to be performed by SC Department of Corrections Inmates with daily oversight by Correction Officers. 
  • Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with agency representatives, horticulture staff and the general public.
Job Description:
 

Responsibilities of the Building/Grounds Supervisor II:

  • Supervise the daily landscape maintenance duties for state owned properties to ensure high quality horticultural services to customers. Supervise and assist in arboriculture and irrigation repairs and apply pesticides as needed. 
  • Assist manager in planning and installing landscape and/or irrigation projects. Conduct inspections and coordinate with building maintenance personnel and contractors to develop or review plans for state landscape projects.
  • Supervise the on-site usage and scheduled maintenance procedures of all equipment and vehicles to ensure that equipment and vehicles are properly maintained and safe for use. Supervise and assist in the operation of small and heavy equipment, owned or rented to ensure proper usage by staff. 
  • Purchase supplies and equipment following state procurement rules and regulations. Prepare budget estimates based on anticipated needs for equipment, materials, and personnel to ensure that projects can be completed efficiently and within estimates. 
  • Maintain accurate records of horticultural programs including pesticide, fertilizer, and seeding in order to comply with regulations and ensure effective use of resources.
  • Attend meetings and seminars in management and horticulture related fields to stay abreast of new and developing practices. Assist the manager in designing and implementing courses for staff through seminar and on-site training programs. 
  • Supervise staff to include preparing performance planning and evaluation documents and related personnel paperwork. Coach, counsel, and train employees. Establish and monitor work processes. Implement management policies and initiatives and promote teamwork.
