MINIMUM AND ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

State Requirements: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and related nursing experience.

Agency Requirements: Licensed to practice as a registered nurse in South Carolina; a bachelor's degree in nursing with 4 years of experience, 2 in a relevant clinical area (e.g., pediatric, medical-surgical, public health) & 2 years in an administrative/supervisory position; or an associates degree in nursing or a diploma in nursing with 5 years of experience, 2 years in a relevant clinical nursing area & 3 years experience in an administrative/supervisory position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of the principles & practices of nursing & prevention of disease & injury. Ability to establish & maintain satisfactory working relationships with all levels of personnel. Ability to plan & organize work. Ability to delegate duties to nursing personnel. Ability to establish confidence & cooperation of juveniles receiving services. Must remain current in BLS. Functions under the minimal supervision of the Administrator of Nursing; annually scheduled performance review.  Follows Health Services, department, state, and federal guidelines; can establish policies & procedures that are particular to his/her area of responsibility. Must have & maintain a valid South Carolina driver's license. May be required to travel within the state; overnight travel is rare. Subject to possibility of physical assault, property destruction & infections. Must wear personal protective equipment to prevent infection. Must have a phone or pager that DJJ can use to contact for urgent or emergent situations.

Job Description:

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

To supervise and participate in the provision of direct nursing care to juveniles receiving services from the  Department of Juvenile Justice for a designated area in accordance with Health Services & Department protocols/standing orders & policies, the SC Nurse Practice Act, and accepted professional nursing standards. Provide supervision & development of staff through training, encouraging personal & professional development, & monitoring work performance. Assures nursing coverage on 2 institutional dispensaries (up to 16 hrs/day, 7 days/wk). Collaborates with the Nurse Manager II for the Broad River Road Complex to maintain coverage for those areas. Orients newly hired employees & nursing contract agency personnel. Assures compliance with various regulatory agency rules/regulations. Monitors & evaluates quality & effectiveness of the nursing care provided to the juveniles; makes changes in the delivery of nursing services to improve those services.  Works collaboratively with the MEC and JDC staff  to resolve day-to-day issues involving the juvenile's nursing/health care. Provides active leadership in providing nursing services; Health Services & Department policies. Monitors quality & effectiveness of nursing care, and ensures appropriate utilization of the agency's electronic health record system. Rotates nursing on-call duties. Maintains an appropriate level of medications & supplies; prepares & maintains records & reports; participates in administrative & supportive activities by attending meetings, preparing reports & carrying out special assignments. Participates in quality improvement activities conducted by Health Services.  Actively participates in the Performance-based Standards (PbS) activities; responsible for the health related aspects of his/her area's Performance Improvement Plan. Performs other related duties as required. Must be able to respond capably to emergencies.  Must be able to work all shifts if the need arises. May be required to work in an area other than regular/normal assignment.
