One and one-half (1.5) years of work experience that involved the independent performance of job duties directly related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Completion of one (1) academic year of a South Carolina High School Automotive Technology or Diesel Engine curriculum may substitute for six (6) months of directly-related experience. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required upon entry to the position. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Job Responsibilities

Performs preventative maintenance inspections, tune-ups, and repairs on all state equipment and vehicles, following the prescribed fluid levels, lubrication, fueling, and tire servicing policies, rules, and regulations.  Inspects vehicles/equipment for safety, checking the brakes, exhaust system, etc.  Diagnoses, repairs, or replaces parts, as necessary, to maintain all automotive gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, filters, exhaust systems, hydraulic systems, pumps, timing belts, controls, cooling systems, and other components of all state equipment and vehicles.   Performs electric welding or gas welding and fabrication, as needed, for repairs to various equipment and for making modifications and upgrades to equipment to improve the production utilizations.  Assists in auto/truck body repairs when necessary.   Uses computerized test equipment such as diesel laptops and handheld scanning tools to diagnose, repair, or replace parts, as necessary, on gasoline and diesel vehicles and equipment.  Operates and performs testing in order to diagnose problems with various on-board computer systems.  Reads and interprets the technical parts manual and service bulletins.  Reports major servicing problems to the Shop Foreman.   Performs work on electrical systems, including repair or replacement of alternators, starters, DMI, equipment exterior lighting, wiring repairs, and other components.   Performs maintenance and repairs on small engine equipment such as lawn mowers, chain saws, pole saws, edgers, trimmers, pressure washers, blowers, compressors, generators, etc.   Maintains a safe, orderly, and clean shop work area and ensures all work is done within OSHA and DHEC compliance.  Ensures that all hazardous waste and materials are properly stored and/or disposed of per DHEC regulations, ensuring all containers are properly labeled.  Efficiently and promptly addresses any discrepancies noted in Shop Yard Reviews.   Repairs vehicles during service calls that require repair in the field before movement and assists in shop operations during after-hours emergencies and inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended hours or 12-hour shifts.  Operates both anti-icing and removal equipment during snow and ice response on highways and bridges, if needed.   Performs other related duties as assigned.



Physical requirement:  Employee must be able to work in inclement weather.  Employee must be able to: carry, lift up to 100 lbs., climb, drive, kneel, push, reach, remove, sit, squat, and twist.
